**A shadowed figure of a cloaked mouse staggered towards the tent entrance, darkening the path in front of him. It was clear that he was hurt by the way he half-limped, half-tripped on his left footpaw - he had come here seeking help. The dying rays of sun flooded the ground around him, creating an odd aura and adding an air of mysticism to the area. Behind the odd figure, shrubs he had chanced upon lay crushed against the dry earth, forced down by his good right footpaw plodding heavily to support his weight.
A high-pitched squeak of pain let out as the mouse accidentally stepped on a rock with his injured footpaw, grinding it deep into the deep cut. Blood spurted out, soaking the ground under him and causing the figure to have to stop to attempt to re-bandage his footpaw. After a hasty and rather clumsy first attempt to tie the original, makeshift blood-soaked bandage tighter, he threw it off in frustration, instead deciding to tear a piece off of his already-ripped tunic to make a new one. The faded yet still dark material was rough against the wound, causing the mouse to wince slightly in pain.
The sooner I find a medic, the better, he thought in resignation. He still couldn't believe that he of all beasts was seeking the help of a healer, after surviving for four seasons on his own. Gritting his teeth angrily, both with that thought circling his mind and the pain shooting up his leg, he finally managed to stand on his good footpaw, using the rock he had sat on previously to help him keep his balance. When the pain finally subsided, he gingerly set his injured paw on the ground and slowly let the weight off what had previously been solely his right footpaw. Pain shot up his leg, completely immobilising it. The mouse looked towards the healing tent with a hopeful eye. It wasn't too far away, maybe fifty yards at the most. With luck someone would spot him.**

**Aster had been at a corner desk, scribbling a list furiously. She looked up as her sensitive hearing detected a squeak coming from outside. The river mousemaid squinted into the sun. She could just make out a small beast coming along the path to the tent, but her weak eyes prevented her from seeing who it was. And the figure seemed to be limping. Aster grabbed a pair of whittled crutches from the corner, and rushed out to meet the other beast as quickly as she could.** All right, Rose, looks like this will be our first patient. Could you get the herbs and everything else set up, please? **Upon getting closer, she recognized Ruviar, and her brow twitched in surprise. She had known the other mouse for only a short while, but since he usually kept to himself and seemed such a loner, it startled her to see him coming to the medics' tent. As she reached him, she grabbed his left forepaw to steady him.** Hi, Ruviar, haven't seen you around in a long time! Here, take these. **She handed him the crutches.**

**Ruviar squinted at the entrance. The sun was behind him, shining down on his back, but it had a funny way of reflecting off the tent in such a manner that it was like looking at the sun. It was barren here, rocky outcrops dotted the dry plains where almost no grass grew. Shrubs popped up in random patches here and there. The Northern reach of Mossflower was only a few hundred yards behind him, to the South, but looking North it seemed like he was in another land entirely.
Something moved near the tent. Maybe someone's coming, he thought, half angrily. His gaze shifted to the ground to avoid the sun's glare, and he eyed his injured footpaw. Why did I come here in the first place? I could've cared for myself. Looking back up again, he saw that the figure was coming closer, and sighed unhappily. It was for the better, in any case.
All right, Rose, looks like this will be our first patient. Could you get the herbs and everything else set up, please?
He jumped slightly when he recognized the voice, then settled down with a slightly confused frown. He hadn't known that Aster was head medic, but then again, he didn't know anyone from the fort very well, so it was to be expected. Turning his head away from the blinding reflection once more, he was startled when his footpaw was grabbed suddenly. He hadn't realized they were that close. Sign of weakness, he told himself, losing your alertness. Maybe it is really getting to me...
Seeing that it was indeed Aster, he relaxed reluctantly, and took the crutches offered. He had seen some like this before, but didn't really know what they were for. Placing them underneath his arms, he took a step warily but was pleased when he saw he could move around comfortably without further injury to his foot. Looking up at Aster, he swallowed before speaking in a low tone of voice. The danger had gone out of his expression, he had realised she was trying to help.**
Thanks.

**Rose's head snaps round at the sound of Aster's voice.**
Right away. Which herbs?
**Rose starts to peer in her first aid kit.**

You're welcome. **Aster watched Ruviar take a step or two, smiling.** We'll need to get back to the tent. This way. **She set off at a slow pace through the soft grass where a path had been beaten down. The river mousemaid called out to Rose, in the tent.** Just get the stuff off the bottom shelf and put a clean cloth at the foot of one of the beds. They're on the rack. **Aster suddenly remembered that she had almost run out of her dried comfrey poultice. Oh well, the ones made out of fresh flowers always did work better. She walked ahead a little bit, then stopped to gather a few pawfuls of the flowers from the comfrey plants that bloomed amidst the mess of herbs surrounding the tent. The mousemaid hastily put the flowers in her herb satchel, looking back to make sure that Ruviar could keep up.**

Got it!
**Rose places a clean cloth at the foot of the closest bed to the enterence from the rack, and gathers the required items before doing one other thing as she sees Aster return with an wounded mouse..**
I placed a bowl of clean warm water by the cloth for cleaning out any dirty wounds.

**Aster stepped over the threshold of the small hut, smiling at Rose.** Thanks. **She checked around, then unslung her herb satchel and emptied the comfrey flowers into a large pestle and mortar nearby.** D'you want to help me with this one?

Hi, Elena, you're just in time! Somebeast just came in a while ago -- set down your things and get ready. You can help Rose and me to heal his footpaw -- he's received quite a nasty gash. **Aster turned to Rose.**
I assume you know how to make a poultice, right?

* Elena gets out a series of herbs, such as yarrow and other such that I cant' remember the name of at the moment, and a roll of bandages.* Right.

Uh... Yeah. Just give me a moment... Lemme see... Comfery poultice...
**Rose starts to think hard.**
Got it.
**Starts to make the poultice.**
What about a yarrow poultice? It might be useful.

Yes, but we're going to add the yarrow later. The standard comfrey poultice serves well as a base. **Aster rummaged around in her sack, coming up with the dried, powdered yarrow flowers. Adding a liberal amount of mint infusion to serve as an antiseptic, she mixed the powder and liquid until they combined into a sterile paste. She took a clean piece of gauze bandaging and laid it on the cloth.** When the comfrey poultice is ready, just spread it on the bandages. **The river mousemaid returned to her work, taking down a small sprig of staghorn moss and chopping it up into small pieces. She mixed it in with the paste, watching the other two medics from her peripheral vision.**
