Name: Scramasax Julian Scraggleshade "Junior"
Gender: Male
Species: Harvest Mouse
Age: 18 seasons / years
Appearance:
Scramasax Julian Scraggleshade has the appearance of a typical harvest mouse, but his distinguishing features are quite significant. He has long, silky ginger hair, the longest tresses reaching the base of his neck in the back, and draped over his forehead and eyes in the front. It is smooth, silky and slightly wavy, a fine hue of reddish gold streaked with straw yellow (which bleaches to flaxen blond in summer). His ears are finely formed, but a little ragged around the edges, slightly pinker on the inside than the rest of him. His eyes are charming round rodent eyes, sparkling green that looks like black. His whiskers are finely combed, curled up at the tips fashionably, clean and translucent, pleasant to look at. His teeth are strong and white, kept in good condition by his healthy diet. He does, however, tend to squint a bit, as he is quite short-sighted.
The fur on his underparts are white, but his silky, fine fur is generally honey-coloured. The fur along his dorsal ridge is streaked with coarser black hairs, and his muzzle is substantially lighter than the rest of his body. The honey colour is diluted by the mingled chocolate brown hairs, though it creates a nice overall outlook, especially with the meticulous grooming his fur is subject to. His tail is long and umber-brown, flexible and prehensile. He has a habit of whipping and lashing it about, but he takes fine care of it, cleaning the fuzzy fur on it daily. His paws are small and pinky-brown, flexible and quick. He is a fine climber, his good-for-gripping tail and paws and his natural agility helping him.
Scramasax is nimble and swift, and built like it. He is quite small, sinewy and flexible, with quick eyes and strong bones. He is small even for a harvest mouse, the result of his premature birth. However, he is fit and quite strong, though he excels more in speed-work over strength-work. His posture is aristocratic and arrogant, as he holds himself high with his back straight and his chin up. His gait is a swift one, as he tends to trot swiftly rather than take long steps, due to his short build. Though his legs are in fine proportion to his torso, long for his build, they are not quite long enough to allow him to keep up with most other beasts. He is steadily rising to the peak of his health, super-charged with energy.
Clothing:
Scramasax Julian Scraggleshade Junior loves his clothing. He has many different costumes, but he wears four frequently, as they are his favourites. He makes sure he is dressed for the occasion, and loves going through his large wardrobe. When travelling and moving about, he carries his four favourites, no matter how much they weigh or how burden-ous they become. He is very careful about his appearance, choosing each costume for each different event, and sometimes combining them, though always careful to avoid clashing colours. He only has one pair of boots, the knee-high fawn hide ones. He also only has one cloak, one inherited from an old guardian. It is black, with a crimson shield crest embroidered, the shield composed of two black crossed scramasax, with two magpies in silver and crimson perched on the corners of the shield, beaks touching. Finally, he has one outfit which he wears when he is unsure of which of his fancy costumes to pick, and that is the very last costume on the line. When he cooks, he always makes sure to have an apron on.
Costume 1 - Le Cavalier
When in his "Cavalier" costume, he sports knee-high boots of fine fawn-coloured hide, which he keeps clean, soft and polished, though he neglects the black soles somewhat. He wears plain almond-brown breeches tucked into the boots, loose and almost baggy, with silver embroidery down the sides. He also wears a light chocolate brown doublet, pointed and with full sleeves, with a high, turned-up collar trimmed with woven silver cloth. To top off the outfit, he has a pair of beige gloves and a black wide-brimmed hat with a tall crown, a dove-grey hatband and a white plume. When in this outfit, he bears his scramasaxes under the rim of his doublet, concealed neatly, and he lets his long hair loose in waves over his collar. Sometimes he dons his coat-of-arms black cloak as well.
Costume 2 - Cap'n Scram
When in his "Corsair Captain" costume, he wears his knee-high fawn-coloured hide boots, as with all his other costumes. He wears alternating long-sleeved, collared shirts of cream-yellow and light chocolate brown. Over his shirt he wears a thick, warm chocolate brown buccaneer coat, adorned with large silver decorative buttons. To add more to the corsair air, he wears a black tricorne hat decorated with two crossed swords in silver thread, with a blue, yellow and red rosette pinned to the side, and the edges trimmed with silver embroidery. He wears also long dark almond-brown trousers to his knees, with split sides from the knee down to accommodate his boots. He wears a wide beige belt with a large brass buckle, using it to keep his trousers up at his waist. In this costume, he ties his hair up in a ponytail, and keeps his scramasaxes at his belt.
Costume 3 - Common Bandit
This is the easiest of Scramasax's costumes, composed of very basic items of clothing. He wears, of course, his regular knee-high, fawn-coloured hide boots, and like with his "Corsair Captain" costume, he wears alternating, long-sleeved, collared shirts of cream-yellow and light chocolate brown. He wears his almond-brown breeches tucked into his boots, and his beige, brass-buckled belt at his waist. He tops it off with a spotted silver and black bandanna. Just in case it gets chilly, he also keeps his buccaneer coat with him. When dressed as a bandit, he wears his hair in a ponytail, protruding from the back of his bandanna.
Costume 4 - A Mouse of Formality
When attending a formal event, Scramasax dresses up fittingly, though a little abnormally. He dons a crimson, full length gown of velvet with embroidery in silver and gold thread, complete with black seams. Under it, he wears a black velvet doublet, with the crossed-black-scramasax-and-two-perched-silver-and-crimson-magpies crest stitched to the front, and with a pointed rim below the waist and a flowery white collar. He wears black breeches with slashes of crimson and his fawn boots, his outfit complimented by well combed hair brushed and held back in waves radiating down his neck, out of his eyes. He keeps his scramasax in certain pockets on the inside of his gown.
Final Outfit - I Don't Know What I Should Wear
Sometimes, Scramasax just can't find the right clothes. Then, he picks up a sharp white shirt with buttoned cuffs and a high, folded-down collar and black, baggy breeches. Over such items of clothing, he flings on a navy-blue overcoat with a wide flattened collar, and occasionally chucks on a top hat. This is the most uncoordinated of his outfits, but he feels most comfortable in it, though he hardly admits that. He wears it for its plainness and its lack of importance, meaning he can dirty it however much he likes. With it, he wears a wide, black belt with a brass buckle, with his scramasax hanging from the left and right of his belt.
Weapons / Equipment:
Scramasax Julian Scraggleshade bears two scramasax, his only weapons. He is not at all good at handling them, despite the sensible length and weight of the blades. They have gently curved, polished steel blades, which he looks after with meticulous care. The grip is bound in fawn hide, like his boots, with a slight pommel and an equally simple, unnoticeable guard. The mouse keeps them in two separate sheaths in different places, depending on his outfit, though always one on his left and one on his right. He keeps them clean and bears them just in case, never with the intention to hurt anybeast with his blades. He uses it more often than not to gather cooking ingredients.
Being a satisfactory cook, his equipment is composed mainly of utensils of that culinary nature. He keeps a small pack containing his equipment, including a small cooking pot, a ladle, herbs, flint, tinder, knives and various other bits and pieces. He also keeps a few small rolls of parchment with recipes and space to add more, along with a quill and ink to write with. He also keeps patches of cloth, thread and a needle handy, as he is useful with such materials. Several bits of grooming apparatus can easily be found in his pack, as he is a vain creature, though kept separate from his cooking and sewing equipment. His pack ends up a rather large bundle, making it impractical.
Personality:
Scramasax Julian Scraggleshade is vain, conceited and concerned about others' opinions of him. He makes sure he is well groomed and presentable, and hates being humiliated and being made a fool of. He can't stand people laughing at him, and lashes out at those who do. He is a proud, arrogant snob, bragging about his talents and turning each conversation to focus on himself. He is not totally unbearable, as he usually reins in his haughtiness, but he still is a rather irritating character. He is also something of a coward and prone to overexagerating, often stealing the glory of others in his tales. He loathes being bested and considers himself superior, due to his vague, but noble ancestry, finding it difficult to accept those below him with respect.
However, he is an amiable fellow behind his haughty mask, but only to those whom he respects. He is a cheerful, helpful fellow in the company of his equals and betters, though completely indifferent and cold in the presence of beasts he considers inferior. In such a way, he is two-sided, making it difficult to judge him. Two beasts may think completely different things of him, and yet know the same complex individual. In tough times, he will overlook his prejudices and work for the best, but otherwise he is two different sides of one beast. He likes to consider himself a deep philosopher, but it is yet to penetrate his brain that his behaviour towards some may not be very nice.
He is a good cook and friend, though with a fiery and flammable temper. He is not one to forget, but he will forgive, though he may harbour bitter feelings. On the other hand, if someone does something nice to him, he will return the favour gladly. He is not a good fighter, though certainly not a pacifist, and so he repays people with other deeds of goodness, such as providing them with excellent meals. He has a knack for craft-work, being talented at both cooking and sewing / embroidery, though not quite so good at art. He is an alright singer, but does not really care about music, or art, though to him, cooking and sewing are important parts of his lifestyle. He is also a fair navigator and cartographer, thanks to his old tutor.
His language is well-tuned, thanks to his quick learning and good education. He sometimes is a know-it-all and an attention hog, displaying the results of his education. He is a keen reader and writer of poetry, and flatters himself by thinking he is a masterful poet, though he is not at all. He scorns bad language and rough, accented language, though sometimes he has no choice but to accept it, especially when it comes from his superiors. He is aristocratic and diplomatic, preferring to negotiate rather than start fighting immediately, even over a trifling matter such as who got more soup at dinner. He is rather selfish, often wanting things his own way, though he is fair enough to give way often.
He is quite disorganized and impractical, as well as often forgetful. He remembers facts that rarely become useful, and he is bad at managing his time wisely. He often wastes time lying about lazily, but when he is in full function mode, he is quick to learn and fast to work. He miraculously manages to find things in the jumble of stuff that inevitably becomes of anything he is to use or is allowed even temporary possession of. Sometimes, he encounters pangs of longing for cleanness and organization, but as soon as he starts cleaning up his stuff, he loses his will and he ends up messier than ever. He has a rather short attention span and little patience, and he dislikes reading long, boring books.
History:
Scramasax Julian Scraggleshade was born Julian Whistove as the son of Martha and Edward Whistove, two prominent Redwallers with a vague, but noble ancestry, reaching back several centuries to a forgotten hero lost in the sands of time, who probably did nothing more remarkable then mend a roof-tile on the Abbey tower. He spent a lot of his time with his teacher, a black squirrel known as Scramasax Mortificae, even after Abbey School was over each day. Young Julian Whistove worshipped him, for being a former wanderer and reformed corsair navigator with a wild temper but an equally impressive stories to tell. The young harvest mouse learned all about navigation and cartography.
Julian Whistove eventually began to show signs of an aptitude for cooking and sewing, so he was employed by the Friar as an assistant in the kitchens, being a reliable, albeit chatty little mouse. He also willingly assisted the Infirmary Sister in her hobby, sewing and embroidery. Unfortunately, Julian was then teased by some of the unkind older dibbuns, as they said sewing and cooking was for little wimpy girls. He was a small lad, and though he had a fine temper, he did not have the strength to defeat the bullies. He stayed with Dr. Scramasax, isolating himself from the others. To try and find something special about himself, he learned about Martin and Matthias and all the great heroes of Redwall, and little Julian decided that his own ancestor had been a great strong hero. He did not tell his parents about the bullying.
But as he grew up, the others kept on bullying him, calling him "Girly Julie", and still his parents didn't know. Dr. Scramasax Mortificae eventually passed away when Julian was fifteen, leaving the young mouse to spend his time climbing trees to get away from the bullies, though still diligently helping the Infirmary Sister and the Friar. Sick of being teased and not being able to do anything about it, he began making plans to leave Redwall, silently honing his survival skills with long solitary walks and trips in Mossflower. Finally, when he was seventeen, Julian finally decided to go after months of delay and wondering. He left home discreetly in search of fortune elsewhere, assuming a new name, Scramasax Julian Scraggleshade Junior, in honour of Dr. Scramasax Mortificae.
Scramasax travelled through Mossflower Woods, searching for the lifestyle that would suit him best, taking with him all his costumes which he had created throughout his lifetime. He spent time out in the wild, running from danger and creating more disguises and costumes. He heard about the Guardians of Mossflower from a friendly squirrel settlement one day, and began searching for information about the famed group, suspecting that he had found his new home. After meeting one of their number, he found out how to get to their fort, and so he travelled there slowly and lazily. Upon arriving in the area, he proceeded to cautiously assess the group, and when he finally deemed it a good place, he went up boldly and joined.
