OOC: Anyone who knows wat to look for, can scout and move, Raiden also had circled slightly east, round the edge, and because he was wearing white, he blends in with the terrain, besides to find the vermin that Raiden had attacked, you wouldn't of been able to see them, but smell and hear them, Raiden is also one-eyed, from a battle many years before, so he doesn't rely much on sight, as he learned to compensate with his other senses... Rant over... for now...

OOC: Okay, thanks Darter.
Um, so you know, I think I’m caught up with everything, but if I miss something, just let me know. Man, you guys post quick…
BIC:
*A tall, handsome young mouse jogged through the snow-laden woods. His breathing was slightly labored but still fairly even, coming out in puffs of air that blew back behind him as he weaved through the tree trunks. His booted paws made a loud crunching sound as they crashed through the icy snow that covered the ground, providing a thick layer of insulation against the cold atmosphere outside. The noises made by the Highlander seemed to crackle through the silence of the Mossflower Wood.
Willem Yewbow was on his way to a meeting with Darter Seastreak and the other Boundary Guardian trainees. The mouse glanced up at the sun, and frowned; it was hidden behind a cloud. I hope I‘m not late… Seeing a fallen log ahead, he smiled grimly and sped up, taking the wood in a bound. Landing in a crouch on the other side, he paused to take stock of his position. Pulling a scroll of parchment from the back of his belt, he ran a paw through his golden headfur as he read it. The scroll was a map of Mossflower, showing the path from the main Guardians of Mossflower Fort to the clearing on the edge of the woods, where Darter was supposed to be meeting the wannabe Boundary Guardians, the new profession that was a mixture of ranger, warrior, and healer.
Glancing around, Willem spotted a landmark--a large, red rock--and checked his map. Almost there. Rolling the parchment and binding it with a woven string, he tucked it back into his belt and headed east at a casual pace. The last thing he needed would be to miss the meeting point in his haste…
After a few minutes of silent trekking, Willem glanced up, hearing something echo through the woods… A voice! Frowning slightly, he stood still and silent, listening intently…there! He started towards the voice. It sounded like one of the Fleetpaw twins, Aster and Sapphire. He couldn‘t have told you which one, as the two had always sounded all too similar to him, but he was sure it was one or the other. Hurrying through the woods, he came upon the river mouse, and recognized her by her clothing.* Sapphire! *Glancing around, he saw the others peering curiously at something in the distance. Trotting closer, he spotted the vermin below and drew a quick breath, muttering a curse word to himself--something he did only on the rare occasion.*
Commander Darter. *Willem kept his voice low, sensing the urgency of the situation. He had arrived just in time to hear the otter‘s plan, and was determined to go along. As he spoke, he reached for his right hip, where he kept his bone-handled hunting knife.* Ah’d like tae come wid ye, sah. Ah’ve got mah bow an’ mah… *The mouse hesitated, feeling empty air where his knife hilt should have been. Frowning, he realized why the blade was missing. Marie Song Blue-eyes.
The female Highlander was Willem‘s mate of two seasons. She was currently away, fighting in the Tournament that was on-going between Guardians of Mossflower and several other prominent warrior-organizations of the land. After nearly being killed in a fight against a rather barbaric dingo, Willem had insisted she keep his hunting knife “just in case.” That had been a day ago. Of all the times for a vermin attack…
Shaking his head, he glanced back to Darter solemnly.* Well, ah’ve got mah bow, anyway, an‘ ah‘m sure ye know ‘ow deadly a beast wid a bow kin be. The point is, ah wanna come wid ye tae go scout, sah. Ah’ve got experience wid trackin’ an’ wilderness fightin’, an’ ah’ve certainly got the experience wid the bow necessary tae make it a deadly enemy. So… *He hesitated for a moment, struggling with what to say next. On the one paw, he knew he could be a great help if he were to go with Darter and the scouting crew, and his instinct was to demand to go no matter what; on the other paw, he knew that Darter would know best, and he should obey his commands. Well, there‘s a first time for everything…* …ah’ll unnerstan’ if ye want me tae stay ‘ere, but ah really think ah could ‘elp ye out there. *He shrugged, struggling to keep any disrespect out of his voice.*

Taundor panted heavily, his breath trailing in the air. He loped quickly after the main group of the boundary guardians. Why did I just have to miss the area and wander off? Taundor leaped over a fallen tree trunk and landed on a shrub. It broke in half and he tumbled head over tail down the slope with a surprised yelp. Landing on his back with his breath knocked out of him, Taundor gingerly picked himself up and examined his surroundings. He noticed the smoke in the air and instantly grew cautious. Heading towards his left, he heard some voices talking. Walking over the last crest, he saluted and sat down. "Taundor Whitefang reporting for duty. Er...I'm not too late am I?"

*The hare dropped the note onto the snow in front of Darter and Sapphire. Smiling, he backed up. Rinafera had his scimitar in his paw. His eyes averted from the vermin for a second, and there was his old friends. It was Taundor, and Marie's husband Willem. He tipped his head to Willem and spoke in a very classy manner.* Why, hello, fine sir. Its a bit cold, wot!
*His cream white fur ruffled as wind blew against him, and he whipped around. The vermin were moving. He ran toward a snow frosted log, and ducked behind it. His brown eyes squinted, looking deep into the woods, trying to spot their choice of the next move. A very ragged ferret stepped out of the camp, wielding a long rapier, he pointed east. There were the slaves; shrews, a few mice, pygmy shrews, and a couple otters. He shook his head in disgust. Getting up, he walked back to Darter. Facing him, the hare pointed at the camp.* Look!
They are moving east, with many flippin' slaves! Bally blighters...
*He went back to the log, ducking deep into the snow. Looking off into the distance, he saw the borders for the Guardians' Territory. Rinafera spotted them, right along side the border. Well, it does not look like a bally attack, wot! He thought wearily. Shifting his eyes back to his superiors, the young hare looked determined.*
Wots the flippin' next move, wot?

*Voldarain trudged on patiently through the cold, struggling to keep his impassive outlook, but feeling the cold bitterly. He was cold, wet, and stiff, but he did not allow himself to slow down at all. The winds whipped and bit at his bare face, making him squint through the dizzying whiteness of the blizzard. With weary footpaws he had marched after Darter, gritting his teeth, and clenching his paws. His damp cloak flapped weakly in the wind, weighed down by the moisture of the snow it had absorbed. His snout felt numb and cold, and he was sure that some of the wetter snow had frozen on his fur. But he was stiff and discontent to brush away the ice. Yet he patiently went on, calling on the last resources of his endurance and strength.
Voldarain followed Darter without question, and was not far behind him, yet not all of his words reached him. The sturdy badger decided that Darter had merely said that they were to shelter from the howling winds and furious snows, and so continued to walk, squinting. But the form of the otter became more vague, and the badger realized that there was too much distance between them. Darter's silhouette disappeared out of sight, and the badger pressed on, trying to gain speed. But he was clumsy, his boots heavy, his cloak wet, and his eyes almost blinded by the flurry of snow. In the terrible whiteness of the snowbound land, the badger stumbled forward, after the otter, gritting his teeth to stop them chattering.
The sound of voices reached Voldarain's cold ears eventually. Relieved, he stumbled in the direction from which he had heard the voices, and found himself under a rocky outcrop. The sound of crunching stones greeted his ears, and the badger noted the scattered shards of rock. He looked about, cursing his slightly blurred vision, and sighed in relief when realizing he was back among his fellow Guardians. They appeared to be in the middle of a conversation. He stayed back, listening carefully to their conversation, and subconsciously checking the area. Once he understood what they were thinking of, he grimly stepped forward. Quickly he raised a salute to Darter, and summoned the most respectful tone he could muster.*
I have heard what you speak of; I shall do what is commanded of me; yet I will say that I believe my talents to belong out there, with you, Commander.
OOC: Sorry for the bad RP there. My creative juices have been sapped by some prose I was writing this morning.

**Laylark sat in silence, breathing on his frozen paws in a desperate attempt to warm them. His breath formed clouds in the air, like little puffs of smoke. He simply nodded to each of them and smiled in acknowledgment of Darter's greeting. The fox continued to watch the others with his mouth shut, the usual feeling of embarrassment and shyness coming over him. He squeezed himself into a corner, ready to just sit a listen when Raiden spoke up.** "I'm going with Darter as well Sapphire, I'm wearing white, so I blend in with the terrain, you have a snow board and are equipped with a sling, I am equipped with a sword, but, you have an advantage over me, you can move fast, and can use your sling as a club. I think that a mixture of abilities in a scout team, is good."**He couldn't help but feel a pang of annoyance as Raiden simply decided what he'd do, not waiting for approval. It wasn't until the mouse left however that he got angry.** HEY! Where d'you think you're going? Get back here! I didn't hear Darter say you could go with him, let alone alone! **As soon as he said the words Laylark couldn't help but feel embarrassed. He rarely got angry... But then again... An almost undetectable bit of pride was hidden being that embarrassment- he'd actually said something about it... His thoughts were cut off as Raiden returned, but not alone. Dragging behind him was a rat.** What was that about?! What did you think you were doing?! You realize how easily you could've gotten lost? I mean, if we'd set out we probably wouldn't've sen you with all that white of your's and, and..... **Laylark can't bring himself to finish..... He'd gotten shy again.** OOC: Sorry bout that Raiden....

OOC: Raiden and Rinafera, we’re still far away from the vermin. You wouldn’t be able to see the vermin moving east, we’re not that close to their camp. Besides, they were setting up for the night, and looked to be in one place for a while. Who leaves fires unattended? Please edit your post or justify it.
Whoa, guys, don’t run away with the plot here. Pay attention to other people’s posts, to our setting and how everything fits together. While Willem, Sapphire and Darter go scouting, it’s fine for some vermin to wander into camp, but keep things reasonable, please. And IC listen to your officers.
BIC…
As Raiden started to head out alone, Darter began to call out for him to come back, but thought better of it to not raise his voice. The vermin could be closer than originally estimated, or maybe there were scouts patrolling the area. Shaking his head slightly, causing snow to fall off and drift gently to the ground, the boundary guardian decided to wait and get everyone else organized rather than chase after the mouse. He heard Laylark’s voice yelling him to come back and motioned for the fox to stop.
“’Ey, matey, no use raisin’ yer voice, there may be vermin about. Save et fer later.”
A cry came from behind the otter commander and he spun to find Rinafera peering at what appeared to be a piece of bark. Wrinkling his snout irritably at the distraction, he was half turned when the hare finished reading what had been inscribed on it. Slaves? He narrowed his eyes until they were barely more than slits, more in anger than anything else. He had committed to waging war on the vermin already, but this gave him more reason. More determination to get the job done. He was focused on his intent to protect Mossflower; nothing would stop him from achieving that goal.
With Raiden gone, Darter decided to choose two more responsible and aware beasts to accompany him. Their skill was also a factor, but he couldn’t afford for them to disobey his orders, they had to be loyal as well. When Sapphire volunteered, the otter nodded his approval at once, he knew the mouse to be a trusted and skilled beast. Now for another… His gaze wandered between the individual soldiers, and came to rest on a second mouse, a bowbeast who appeared to have arrived only a bit earlier. As the boundary guardian struggled to recall his name, the mouse asked to come along, and by his Northland accent he recognized him as Willem.
The otter had never had a chance to really meet the ranger, but knew of his solid reputation with a bow. He listened carefully to his words, and smiled to himself. Just the beast for the job. Since Willem had no other weapons but his bow, Darter reached behind him to pull free a sheathed long knife of his own from a brace of three strapped to his broad belt. He passed the weapon to the ranger, and nodded to him.
“Welcum ter ‘ave ye cum along, mate. ‘Ere’s a blade fer now, in th’ event that we git ambushed in close quarters.” Out of the corner of his eye Darter spotted figures moving through the blinding snow, coming towards them. In moments his sword was unsheathed and the otter crouched in his unique defensive position, ready for an attack. He drew a long breath and the cold air choked his lungs, causing him to wince slightly despite his fierce exterior expression. As the beasts came closer, the otter let out a relieved sigh as he recognized Raiden and straightened up. The hilt of his broadsword slammed against the edge of his scabbard as he sheathed it heavily. Behind the mouse was what appeared to be a rat. The otter, not surprised by this intruder, directed Raiden to Laylark with a gesture of his paw.
“’Ead o’er ter Laylark, mate. He’ll know what ter do.”
The otter glanced sideways to the fox in question and winked roguishly before outlining his instructions.
“Yer in command whilst I’m gone, an’ choose somebeast ter be yer second-in-command fer now. When he come back,” he gestured to himself, Willem and Sapphire, “I’d like yer t’ ‘ave a camp set up for us.” His gaze wandered upwards, to the mountains, as he finished. “I’ve a feelin’ we’ll be stayin’ fer a while, mate.”
Momentarily lost in thought, Darter stared at the smoke rising above the horizon. For the first time in a while he noticed the sun, half-hidden behind the grey mountains. Streaks of red blended into the darkening sky. The otter found himself enjoying the moment of beauty, forgetting about the battles that almost certainly lay ahead.
Gesturing over his shoulder, he motioned for Sapphire and Willem to follow him into the shadows.

Post by Aster & Sapphire Fleetpaw on Aug 27, 2006 16:28:47 GMT -5
**Sapphire scooped up a pawful of snow, and followed, quickly patting the wet white powder into a tight snowball in her paws. Throwing hard snowballs would have to suffice in case of ambush; Sapphire did not want to waste the fifteen or so pebbles that she had left in her stone pouch. She knew well the effects of frosted snowballs when used in combination with a sling; a run-in with some vermin had taught her that the hard way a few seasons back. The young trainee warmed the outside of the small snowball between her mittens; then, once the snow had begun to melt, she quickly exposed it to the driving wind and cold again. The covering quickly hardened into a thin layer of ice, creating a large snow pebble. The tactician placed the missile into her half-empty stone pouch.
Sapphire skimmed another pawful of frosted snow from the surface of the white ground, and rolled it between her mittens, her mind working quickly. If the vermin found the campsite early, then the Boundary Guardian trainees, along with Darter, would have to set some kind of attack to the vermin. Mentally, she categorized the others according to their ability, then gave voice to her thoughts.** Commander Darter, I was thinking that if we could send out a special squad, we could pick off a sizeable part of the vermin one by one. Then, if all goes right, we might launch a sneak attack once we're sure of a victory against their numbers. But if we're discovered early, then we'd be forced to retreat. We could launch either a three-pronged attack or a pincer movement -- both should work well in this kind of a snowstorm. What do you think?
**Sapphire glanced back and forth between the commander and Willem, working out another backup.** Staying downwind of them, like we are now, should provide good cover. The smoke will blow away from them, but if they send out a lot of scouts at once, we might have to take some prisoners. **The river mousemaiden had always maintained a somewhat pessimistic attitude; she would need three backup plans to be fairly certain of success. As of now, she only had two of the three thought out. Perhaps Willem or Darter could come up with a third plan; Sapphire was still searching for a third strategy.**

OOC: Raiden moved ahead and circle east a touch, he went round the edge of them to the south east area of the camp, the vermin two were near the snow drift where Raiden had lay down, even a though a blizzard can reduce sight, my earlier post sates that Raiden relies more on his other senses than his sight, he also knows how to use terrain to his advantage, he knew that if he wanted to take out the vermin, he would need speed, and suprise. I think I went off topic there, but I gave my reason, and some other information...
BIC: Got it sir, good luck scouting, becareful though, the wind 'll pick up dramaticly out of the tree line.
**Still draging the KOed rat, Raiden walked calmly over to Laylark.**

OOC: Rinafera... That's not the point. There are trees in the way, and blowing snow. The only way we can tell they are where they are is because of the smoke above the trees.

OOC: Sorry, I did not quite understand. I guess I have not read the posts of others carefully enough. Live and learn, eh? BIC:
*Rinafera felt more cold wind blow against him. Sapphire, Darter, and Raiden were gone, scouting ahead. As was Willem, of course. The hare felt quite useless and alone, so he simply sighed and waited it out. The trees and snow were blocking his view with for any further sitings of anyone, so he sat down on the cold, wet snow and patiently sat there. As Raiden gave Laylark the beaten rat, Rinafera jumped to attention. He shuffled over there quickly, saluting smartly to Laylark with extreme confidence.*
Laylark, ma'am, I'd like to give it a bally try. Can I interrogate the flippin' blighter with you, ma'am?
*He gripped his scimitar tightly, and glared at the rat in prejudice.*

**Laylark grinned somewhat sheepishly at Raiden, still embarrassed about his little outburst. He opened his mouth to reply to the mouse when Rinefera saluted.** "Laylark, ma'am, I'd like to give it a bally try. Can I interrogate the flippin' blighter with you, ma'am?"**The fox cocked an eyebrow at the excited beast, not quite sure what to say. After a long hesitation he finally came to his senses and thought of a decent reply;** You know, you're the second hare to have called me that.... Um, Raiden, I guess just put him down. Watch him closely. When he wakes up, you restrain him.... And sure, you can help interrogate him Rinafera.... Um.... **It was as Laylark finished that the rat blinked open his clouded eyes. They snapped shut again, and the fox figured they'd just have to wait.** OOC: Um, Laylark's a guy. And sorry for the crap short post....
